Omega 3 Complex

Vitaminity Omega 3 Complex is a food supplement based on fish oil with unsaturated fatty acids and Omega 3 (min. 90%) and EPA/DHA (min. 75%). Each softgel contains 900 mg of Omega 3, including 510 mg of EPA and 240 mg of DHA.

Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their numerous beneficial properties for human health; nevertheless, they are hardly found in our diet, unlike omega-6 fatty acids; these are contained in vegetable oils, which are consumed in large quantities by the Mediterranean population through their normal daily diet. The Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid respectively) are endogeneously synthesised in human tissues through an enzymatic process from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) introduced through the diet. However, such biosynthesis is inefficient, since EPA and DHA inhibit two key enzymes of the process. Therefore, it is extremely important to introduce these fatty acids through proper supplementation of fish oil high in Omega-3.

Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats in the diet helps maintain normal cholesterol levels in the blood (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids are unsaturated fats). EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function; DHA helps maintain a normal brain function and vision.

Composition: Fish Oil 5525EE high in Omega-3 fatty acids (min. 90%, EPA and DHA min. 75% in the form of ethyl ester), Food Gelatin; firming agent: glycerol (E422), antioxidants: natural d-alpha tocopherol.

Fish oil with total unsaturated and Omega-3 fatty acids (minimum 90%) and EPA/DHA (minimum 75%)

EPA/DHA ratio 2:1: in diets poor in Omega-3 fatty acids, it is extremely difficult to reach adequate EPA levels, due the metabolic work required for its synthesis, and because eicosapentaenoic acid is used to synthesize DHA through an enzymatic process based on desaturase, elongase and peroxisomal oxidation. Therefore, EPA and DHA intake in a 2:1 ratio ensures introduction of these Omega-3 fatty acids in a proper proportion; furthermore, scientific evidence suggests that this is the most effective ratio.

Origin: the oil fish contained in the softgel capsules of Vitaminity Omega 3 Complex comes from fishing in the cleanest seas, based on a molecular distillation process which protects oil against oxidation and trans-isomerization. In addition, the manufacturing process includes a preliminary purification step for removing impurities from raw oil.

High quality: A very low contaminant content and purity standards (peroxides, TOTOX, lead, mercury3, dioxins and furans, PCBs) complying with the GOED (Global Organization for EPA and DHA) Omega 3 monograph result in remarkable safety for consumers. GOED is a member-driven organization which has been joined by leading, reliable manufacturers of Omega-3 fatty acids. They work with the main European authorities – for example, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) – in quality, safety and indications of use of nutritional products based on EPA and DHA. Therapeutic effects from intake of Omega-3 fatty acids

Cardioprotection. In a clinical trial, 11,324 patients surviving myocardial infarction were randomly assigned supplements of Omega-3 fatty acids (1 g daily, n=2836), vitamin E (300 mg daily, n=2830), both (n=2830), or none (control, n=2828) for 3.5 years. Treatment with Omega-3 fatty acids, but not vitamin E, was shown to significantly lower cardiovascular risk: benefit was attributable to a decrease in the risk of death (20%) and cardiovascular death (30% ) in the treated patients. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted on 339 patients to evaluated the efficacy of long-term supplementation with Omega-3 fatty acids in preventing coronary restenosis. The patients were given 3 g EPA and 2.1 g DHA daily in the form of 1 g Omega-3 capsules (EPA and DHA content in the form of ethyl esters ≥85%) one month before percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and one month later, and were then given half the dose for 6 more months vs. olive oil placebo. Restenosis was assessed by quantitative angiography and defined in two ways, namely as recurrence of stenosis  >50% of the diameter (definition I), and as loss >50% of lumen gain immediately after PTCA (definition II). The trial produced the following results: vessel restenosis rate 29.4% (definition I) and 31.6% (definition II) in the group receiving Omega-3 fatty acids vs. 39.6% and 35.4% in the group receiving placebo; restenosis rate per patient 31.2% (definition I) and 33.6% (definition II) in the group receiving Omega-3 vs. 40.9% and 37.1% in the group receiving placebo. Therefore, long-term treatment with Omega-3 fatty acids before coronary angioplasty results in a reduced restenosis rate compared to placebo. Japanese randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint trial aimed at assessing the efficacy of long-term intake of EPA in preventing major coronary events (sudden cardiac death, fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction, and other nonfatal events, including angina pectoris, angioplasty, stenting and coronary artery bypass) in hypercholesterolemic patients (trial conducted on 18,645 patients with total cholesterol ≥6.5 mmol/L). A group of patients was given 1,800 mg EPA with statins daily; another group was given only statins (control). Patients with a history of coronary artery disorders receiving EPA showed a 19% reduction in major coronary events. * Cholesterol and triglycerides. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trial lasting 6 months, followed by a further 6 months of open-label study, conducted on 935 patients with hypertriglyceridemia, associated with additional cardiovascular risk factors, e.g. glucose intolerance and NIDDM (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus type 2). In 6 months’ open follow-up  with 2 g high-concentration Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of ethyl esters (EPA and DHA content in the form of ethyl esters ≥85%), patients with hypertriglyceridemia and glucose intolerance and NIDDM (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus type 2) showed a reduction in blood triglyceride levels, total cholesterol (-4.15% vs. the 6 months’ treatment with placebo) and a rise of HDL cholesterol (+7.4%) with no alterations in glycemic parameters. High quality: A very low contaminant content and purity standards (peroxides, TOTOX, lead, mercury3, dioxins and furans, PCBs) complying with the GOED (Global Organization for EPA and DHA) Omega 3 monograph result in remarkable safety for consumers. GOED is a member-driven organization which has been joined leading, reliable manufacturers of Omega-3 fatty acids. They work with the main European authorities – for example, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) – in quality, safety and indications of use of nutritional products based on EPA and DHA. * Blood pressure. Over 17 clinical trials showed that supplementation of diet with high doses of Omega-3 fatty acids, usually exceeding 3 g daily, significantly reduces blood pressure in individuals with untreated hypertension. * Vision. Triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted with 74 healthy participants, aged 45-77 years. Cognitive and visual acuity measures and plasma levels of DHA were determined at baseline and after 90 days of supplementation with 1 g tuna oil comprising 252 mg DHA, and 60 mg EPA. For participants with corrected vision, the group receiving DHA were found to have significantly better visual acuity post-treatment compared to the placebo group. Systematic reviews of medical/scientific literature aimed at assessing the effects of Omega-3 fatty acids in preventing the development or progression of pigmentary retinopathy. Cohort study, based on AREDS data – Basal intake levels of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) were compared with the course of the disease (within 12 years) in approximately 1,800 individuals at high risk of developing AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration). The group consuming the largest amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids showed a 30% reduction in the risk of developing the disease, thereby proving that nutritional measures may mean a valid, cost-effective strategy for preventing AMD. * Skin. Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted on 79 volunteers who were given 5 g Omega-3 fatty acids (70% EPA plus 10% DHA) or a control lipid daily for 3 months. Oral administration of Omega-3 fatty acids seems to block UVR-mediated immunosuppression. * Obesity. Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, cross-over trial conducted on 59 individuals (obese and lean, elderly and young) who were given 3 g Omega-3 fatty acids and CLA daily for 12 weeks, with a wash-out phase of 12 more weeks among crossovers. The trial showed that, in young obese men, CLA and Omega-3 fatty acids prevent abdominal fat from building and increase lean body mass (method used to determine body composition: DXA – dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry). * Bone and joint pain. Intake levels of fish and polyunsaturated fats were estimated in a sample of 623 adults aged over 75 years, using validated food questionnaires, which also allowed minor components of the diet to be determined. Mineral bone density and the changes over 4 years were recorded. The results of this trial suggest that high consumption of fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (>3 servings per week) is associated with maintenance of femoral bone density in both males and females, thereby supporting the protective role of both fish and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the elderly. The protective effect resulting from high consumption of arachidonic acid may depend on EPA+DHA intake. Over 17 randomized, controlled trials conducted to determine the analgesic effects of Omega-3 fatty acids in patients with arthritis. * Sports. In an intervention trial, the inflammatory response to eccentric exercise (biceps curls) was assessed in healthy adults (males and females) after 14 days’ Omega-3 fatty acid restricted diet (control) and after 7 days’ supplementation with 3 g Omega-3 fatty acids daily. The inflammatory response was measured before and 48 hours after eccentric exercise; it was assessed on the basis of the pain rate, swelling and muscle temperature. The trial showed that supplementation with Omega-3 fatty acids reduces pain and inflammation markers following exercise. * Nervous system. Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted on 174 patients with neurological disorders receiving EPA and DHA (1.7 g and 0.6 g respectively) and placebo daily for 6 months, followed by administration of Omega-3 fatty acids for a further 6 months. Significant effects in delaying cognitive function decline (determined using the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale – MMSE) were shown in 32 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MMSE >27). Over 15 clinical trials (including prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials) conducted on 916 patients. EPA supplementation = 60% of total EPA/DHA (daily dosage ranging between 200 mg and 2,200 mg) proved effective against primary depression.
